How Family Mediation Works

Divorce doesn't have to be like this. How It Works

You contact Family Mediation Centers™ either via email or by telephone.

Our staff will gladly speak to or email both parties about the mediation process and scheduling an appointment.

We will set up a mediation orientation appointment to answer all of your questions, so we can start the process. We offer an orientation session at a reduced fee for couples who want to learn about the process and meet their mediator.

Remember, our mediators are neutral third parties here to assist you in resolving your disputes. They can assist you in resolving all issues of your divorce. We have mediators who speak English, Spanish, and Creole. Our mediators have extensive experience in resolving disputed issues such as custody, child support, visitation, alimony, distribution of assets, and any other concern you may have.

We can schedule your mediation together in the same room or you can be in separate rooms. It is strictly up to you; the mediator will accommodate your personal needs.

At family mediation centers, we understand that getting divorced is a life altering experience. Our mediators recognize that a contested, contentious divorce can take years and cost fortunes. That is why it is our goal to make you understand that it is time to reshape your future -- not rehash your past.

If you choose to proceed with the mediation process, our mediator will set aside as much time as you need to make sure all of your issues have been discussed and resolved to satisfaction of both parties. Once you have settled all of your issues, the mediator will prepare your settlement agreement. This agreement will provide a detailed resolution to all of the matters brought before the mediator. The signing of the agreement by the parties is done so freely and voluntarily. Remember if you choose, you can have an attorney review the agreement prior to signing it or bring your private attorney at any time during the mediation process.

Again, the entire process is voluntary. You will never be forced or coerced to enter into a mediated settlement agreement.

If you have issues that require attention outside of the mediation, such as co-parenting, taxes, or valuation of pensions, we have professionals available to assist you with all of your needs. That is why we are the “one stop center.”

Our professional staff is aware that the mediation process is new to you and we will gladly assist you and answer all of your questions related to our services.

Our Fees

We charge an hourly rate for mediation, with no retainer fee.

Please contact our office if you have any questions about the fees for any of our other services.

7 Reasons Why Mediation is the Answer
  1. Divorce does not have to be a war. You can save time and money. Go to mediation, no lawyer required.
  2. Mediation focuses on finding answers, not on escalating disputes.
  3. Fortunes have been spent trying to prove you are “right” or you have been “wronged.” It is much cheaper to get peace of mind through a mediated settlement.
  4. Do not start a war you can’t fight to the end. Otherwise, you will lose the war and pay for it too.
  5. No one really ever wins in court in a family matter, but everyone pays, even the “winner.”
  6. No judge knows more about your marriage, finances, or children than you. Don’t let a complete stranger make decisions about your future.
  7. Lawyer fees are based on the time spent on your case, not the time spent in your marriage. Even a short term marriage can take long periods of time to dissolve, as well as large sums of money in fees and costs.
